PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS & TIPS

Welcome to the Color Me Mine Uptown!

We are open for studio painting and can’t wait to see you! TO-GO Kits are also available for home painting and here we have some painting instructions for you.

  1. Before you begin painting, prepare your workspace. Things you will need are water bowl, paper towels, and a paint pallet.
  2. Wash your hands before starting to paint. If you eat while painting, you must wash your hands between touching food and touching your piece. Oil and grease can cause the paint to lift when firing.
  3. Wipe down the ceramic with a cloth to remove dust.
  4. Plan out your design. You can lightly mark bisque surface with a pen. It will burn off in the firing process. You can also find some design ideas and techniques on our website. Click here  https://uptown.colormemine.com/techniques/  or  https://uptown.colormemine.com/projects/  to find them.
  5. Start with your lightest color first. One coat of any color will be translucent. Two coats will be semi-opaque and show brush strokes. Three coats will be opaque. Always let one coat dry before applying the next coat. Make sure to rinse and dry your brush with clean water and a paper towel between colors. We do not recommend more than 3 coats or paint pouring; if the paint is applied too thick there is a possibility of it peeling, bubbling or cracking in the kiln.
  6. Any part of your piece that you don’t paint will come out shiny and white. Some people paint it all, some people don’t, and this is completely up to you. But if you are painting a mug or a tea pot we recommend you to paint the whole pottery, especially inside the mug/pot. It helps your mug or tea pot last longer since you are going to have hot water in them (your item is going to be food safe after firing as long as they are not broken or chipped).
  7. Do not put your brush in water before adding paint. The paints are water based and adding water to your brush will thin the paint.
  8. Remember that dark paints will cover lighter colors. Light colors over dark can usually be seen but not as pure a color as it is influenced by the dark color underneath.
  9. To fix any mistake, just let the paint dry perfectly then use a sand paper to scrape it off.
  10. Once finished painting, allow the pieces to dry for 24 hours before wrapping them up and transporting them to the store to be glazed and fired.

If you order the kit online you can choose your colors by the numbers as you see on the photo.
